Welcome one and all to one of… if not THE least prepared teams on this year’s Mongol Rally!
After hearing we were unsuccessful in the first and second draw for this years rally, we had almost given up all hope of getting a place, but as they say third time’s a charm and low and behold on the third and final draw we got a place!!!
To those of you who don’t have the foggiest what the Mongol Rally is…We shall attempt to travel a third of the way around the earth, from London to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven't heard of… in a crap car that has an engine with no more than 1 litre of power. That’s right! And our vehicle of choice is a very handsome Citroen AX. Nice.
“By the great beard of Zeus, isn’t it going to be dangerous?!” I hear you say. And the answer is yes, yes it will be. We will literally be risking our lives on this adventure and what for?! “And why are you doing this?” its all in the name of charity.
The charities we're supporting are:
• Mercy Corps Mongolia who aim to give a better quality of life to the residents of rural Mongolia. (http://www.mercycorps.org.mn/)
• Hope and Homes, who are dedicated to finding homes for orphaned, abandoned or vulnerable children in the poorest regions of the world. (http://www.hopeandhomes.org/)
• Christina Noble Children's Foundation who aim to help children in need of emergency and long-term medical care & provide educational opportunities. (http://www.cncf.org/)
Every donation, no matter how small, will help us reach our target of £1000 and we will be massively grateful… the charities will probably like it too… and every penny will go straight to them, nowhere else. Sadly the system does not let us embezzle funds!

Thats right everyone the two pinnacles of french engineering have made it into Mongolia. After and mad chase to combine our convoy once again the two ax's and the micra were reunited about 100km away from the Ukraine - Russia Border where we had the joy of encountering the Russia Bribe mokeys for the first time a costly learning experience. Since then we worked out if everyone on the mongol rally paid the average amount of bribes then the Russian police force would be richer to the sum of $20,000. That said Russia itself was a beautifu8l country and most of the people were very nice and not at all like the stereotype of Russia gangsters all carrying AK-47s however that would have been off the chain. Our first mistake in Russia was to understimate its vast size and thinmking we could get to the khazakstan border in a day or two truned out to be 3 or 4 days due the traffic an dgeneral condition of the roads being worse than we expected. Due to the time constraints of the group and the feared conditon of FIFI (at this point we had to make a minor repair to her wheel arch to stop the wheel rubbing i.e big hammer to the body work) it was decided that the two Ax's woul nip into and out of khazakstan just to say we'd been there where as the micra crew plus Dave would try and complete a journey through khazakstan. This is where our belief in planning ahead fell down and upon taking a minimum of 4hrs to get throubgh the Russia-Khazakstan border and then almost getting ripped off at a cafe for a $200 soup (serioulsy taking the michael) we split up, where the Ax's clique carried on quickly towards the...[Read More] |
