Baatar Battalion 3 men, 1 granny-mobile (our beautiful Nissan Micra), 13 countries, £1000+ for charity, 10 000miles, zero mechanical knowledge - can we make it?!?

The Mongol Rally is an annual event run for charity in which teams attempt to drive a 'crap' car (under 1litre) from London to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, via whatever route they choose (or randomly find themselves taking, due to useless Hibbert navigation).

From Samara in Russia we drove to the Kazakh border which went ok, although we had to give away our wind-up torch as a bribe! Arrived in Kazakhstan late in the evening, and quickly set up camp in a random field. From there had a big few days driving, going from Uralsk to Aktobe to Aralsk - at times the roads were unbelievable - there were about 4 bad stretches- twice we did only about 100km in 6hrs, and in one pothole the roof-rack fell off  (but has stayed re-attached since)!  The desert was unbelievably hot and barren, we camped two more nights in the desert on the road down to the Aral Sea (which is drying up and we saw lots of rusting ships just buried in sand. From Aralsk to the Uzbek border (Shymkent-Tashkent) the roads were better and we made quicker progress arriving at the Kazakh border at 6o'clock after several overheatings and looking around a giant mauseloum and deserted silk road city.

Arriving at the Kazakh-Uzbek border we were stopped by police 3times in about 500m, and then discovered the border was closed (for possibly as long as two years?)... so we started to drive around the border looking for a crossing that foreigners with a car were allowed to use - we had no luck despite numerous locals trying to help. By 10o'clock we gave up and drove past a nice looking restuarant which we discovered also acted as a Kazakh nightclub, but they offered for us to stay on there sofas in the garden in our sleeping bags which we did! The next day we spent another 4-5hrs driving around trying to find a crossing eventually finding one, where we were made to wait in the boiling sun for no apparent reason for about 7hrs - but eventually...[Read More]
